St Mary’s Churchyard and Parish Burial Ground
St Mary’s Churchyard was “closed” in 1997.
Shackerstone Parish Council purchased a strip of land, immediately to the west of the churchyard, from the Crown to be used as a new, non-denominational, burial ground. Subsequently, in 2001, the old churchyard fence and gates were replaced by those present today. The cost of this was funded by the Parish Council, grants from LEAF (Leicestershire Environment Action Fund Ltd) and the Crown Estate Commissioners. Local residents pledged volunteer time to help with some of the practical work involved, which was necessary to support the grant applications.
When the Crown Commissioners sold the Gopsall Estate in 2017, Shackerstone Parish Council purchased another strip of land, west of the current burial ground, to make long term provision for burial space within the Parish. Currently this area is unfenced.
